Main Story
Arc VIII

[Rufus gives Denzel his first mako treatment and Zack wakes up.
Jenova's in anger goes to the roof and attacks the airship (going feral).
Denzel rushes in and tells Zack and Sephiroth before he is taken out to Rufus in the cockpit.
Sephiroth takes the Buster Sword and leaves to face Jenova, meeting up with Genesis.
Tseng has become reinfected. Reno remains with him

Rufus finally moved from his position where he had been sitting for the past few hours watching Denzel struggle against the affects of the mako.
Standing up he released one of the teenagers wrists.
"I will postpone your evaluation of SOLDIER until after Zack returns from a mission he is to go on."
Rufus removed each restraint from Denzel and he placed a pitcher of water on the bedside table with a glass.
"Keep your fluids up I will be back in a few hours to check on you."

Walking from the room. Rufus only had a speck of remorse for his actions at that stage.
They would need all the help they could get in the future.
It's not like ShinRa hadn't hired kids in the past to get dirty for them.
The issue was this was Cloud's kid and he had not heard a thing from Cloud since he saw him with that clone.
Rufus truly hoped the blonde was just lying somewhere unconscious for the boy's sake.

Cloud even after disowning the child was all the kid seemed to have on his mind.
Idol worship at it's extreme.

The main thing he had was to deal to two stubborn 1st Class SOLDIER's.
Then probably listen to the arguments from Reno why they had to accompany Sephiroth to Wutai.
But he'd gotten used to switching Reno's more annoying complaints off in the past.
He was good at what he did and if kept them alive that was all the more reason to send him.

Denzel's head was spinning and he could barely sit up. His body curled slightly as he shuddered. He couldn't even see straight much less think. The idea of even drinking was beyond him. Denzel clenched his eyes shut and tried to will his body to stop its shuddering. No matter how much he wish it would it wouldn't stop. Nothing made sense anymore and he shook as he curled tighter.

Was it worth it?

Right now he really didn't know, he just wanted it to stop. Reluctantly he pulled himself up into a sitting position. His head spun and it sunk into his hand. Focus... he needed water... but he couldn't even see straight. Lips parted as he drew a breath, his mouth dry. Where was he? What had happened? He remembered the treatment but everything else was blurred.

A groan escaped, the sun far lower than when he had fallen asleep. Sephiroth shifted within the bed and his mind focused on what had happened. The rest had left him sharper but for a moment he allowed his mind to linger on what had happened. That was right, he had to speak with Zack. The green eyes flickered as he lifted himself from the bed and grabbed the coat from the edge of the bed.

It was time to continue this. He would need to return to the room anyways, he had left both swords within there.

The silver hair fell back around him as he moved down the hall to Zack's room. Slowly his gaze lingered on the other man for a moment. This was because he did not sacrifice himself to her. That was the reason that she had used Zack.

His friend was the sacrifice for his choice.

Zack had not realized how tired his body had been. He had just crashed. Even waking up was a mission.
It wasn't until he heard the door opened his training mind woke him up.
Zack waited for the moment his senses seemed to tingle in reaction to something.
There was no hostile move on his life and he rolled over in the bed.

Zack blinked looking at Sephiroth standing there. Sitting up slowly Zack rubbed his eyes.
"Seph... you sleep okay?" His body ready to just fall back out into the world of unconsciousness.
Everyone knew he wasn't a wake up instant kinda guy. Flopping back on the bed he let out a breath.
Sephiroth had THAT look on his face. That angsting look Zack knew too well.

"Scratch that are you okay in general?"

Sephiroth lifted his head as soon as Zack changed the question. Was he okay? No, he was not okay, not by any stretch of the word, but admitting so would be weakness. It would display that inner weakness, the one that he forever kept hidden. "I am fine. You should be more worried for yourself."

Sephiroth walked towards the bed, refusing to look towards the dresser where the pieces of Masamune lay. He sat on the edge of the bed and arms crossed for a moment. If Zack was awake things needed to be taken care of. He was his superior now, no longer just his friend, and at the back of his mind was the threat he had made on Rufus' life.

All he could do was carry on, pretend that this did not affect him, but how much longer could he continue this charade? He didn't know, he had held such a charade before, acting as if the death of one friend the betrayal of another had not mattered. He had only held out so long and when finally offered love he had taken it, he had taken her touch and in his anger at the world had destroyed, had sought to destroy it, all for a world where pain was no more.

He had been a fool. There was no promised land, no escape from this hell, though for this moment it seemed survivable.

Sephiroth's expression, his mannerisms they were defensive like last time. Like when Angeal had... died. Zack felt hurt by it. He was shutting off again.
He inwardly sighed at the stubborn streak of this man. When Seph said that Zack should be more worried about himself.
He knew it was true. He was the lone infected remaining. Not that Yazoo didn't count, but Yazoo had loved her.
Zack had only known her destruction before she touched him. Pulled him deep into her fold and shown him her love.

Zack clutched at the sheet as Sephiroth sat down on the end of the bed. He shook his head for a moment.
That feeling was there lingering and he looked at Sephiroth. Her love lingered there, she knew he would never hurt her.
He couldn't. He was himself right at this moment. But her influence was still there and it was playing with his emotions.
He felt hurt by Sephiroth not admitting that he wasn't fine, perhaps that was her betrayal at his denial of her love.

"Bullshit Seph. Don't lie to me. You're not fine, no more than I am. I'm screwed I know that. Just don't shut me out because of it."
Zack didn't know where it had come from, confusion, anger, irritation at this feeling she had woken inside.
A feeling that should not have been directed at his now superior. If there was a desk nearby he would be slamming his head against it.
"I'm confused enough as it is without you lying to me." He touched the side of his own head.

She was just there her emotions being passed through his body via her cells that moved through his veins.
Zack let his head drop. "I don't know what emotions are mine or hers anymore, so you should be true to me about yours."

Sephiroth stood in an instant and the green eyes blazed towards Zack as he demanded to know these emotions, these ones he had no desire to feel nor did he understand. They had led him to do things and say things he normally would not. Once he had been so desperate for love of a mother and now he could not be far enough away from it. "What do you want to hear Zack? That I am no was human as you once were? That I do not know how to deal with this or my shattered blade, as broken as I have been."

Sephiroth turned away as a breath escaped. "All there is is guilt of all the things I have done, all the pain my actions have brought about. I will never be redeemed and only will bring pain for others. You, Kadaj, everyone who has been infected because of my actions..."

"These emotions, they cannot be controlled. They were not a problem before, but perhaps it is this humanity that makes them powerful."

Sephiroth moved forward and his palm slammed against the headboard on one side of Zack's head. "Be it humanity or not, it has not been a struggle until I interacted with you. You brought on each one of these emotions that I cannot control, that I can not understand. Emotions and confusion that have never been there before, making me do and say things I would have never."

Zack jumped as the hand slammed against the headboard by his very head.
Sephiroth was angry and Zack at first, thought there was blame in his tone of voice.
Those eyes blazing at him. Zack felt like he really was being blamed for something out of his control.
Then it took a while for his mind to realize that perhaps that was not a blame but a confession.

Zack could only give Sephiroth a shocked look. So there it was. He was speechless.
The incident at the lab probably brought those feelings on. When Zack had kissed him because of... her.
The action had woke up not only what Zack inwardly desired but perhaps Seph's feelings too.
He reached up and pulled Sephiroth down hugging him. Seph needed to know he cared back.

"Sorry..." He could only whisper the word. "Because of the kiss right?"

The arms wrapped around his back and pulled him down against the other. So few had ever been allowed to do that, so few dared, and yet Zack was there holding him. The apology echoed in his ear and his mind went from wanting to pull away out of old habit to wanting to hold the man closer. He had been destroyed by Jenova, made human, he had suddenly lost so much of himself and now even his weapon was gone. In one day after so long he had been broken.

"Yes."

He could not lie about it. It had been growing progressively worse since that kiss, the one that he returned. He told himself that it was only to put Zack off guard, to have a chance to rest the control of the Buster Sword away from him. It was a lie. There would have been other ways.

The eyes stared down at Zack.

Zack let one hand slip from his hold on Sephiroth, to touch the side of his face.
"Know that you're not the only one. I just don't know where to go from here."
The urge was there lingering and he wanted to, these emotions were running stronger than the others.
He couldn't tell either apart at that moment. Just he wanted to. He felt like it.

'Let go, move away... don't complicate things.' He was mentally arguing with himself.
His body reacted and did the opposite and lent up. Lips moved slow and over Seph's.
This time he was doing this without being influenced by her. His own desire. Just to check he told himself.
Make sure it was legit and not just an infatuation with a once off kiss that shouldn't have happened.

It's not like he'd give up skirt chasing, this was just to ease his mind.
There would be no spark like last time. Least he told himself this.
Even as his lips lingered over Seph's taking them in against his own.
He could forget this ever happened, let Seph move on as well.

But there it was that thing he couldn't describe right there again.
Drawing him in and his hand clutched at the back of Sephiroth's jacket.
It wasn't supposed to be there, it wasn't supposed to make him feel this way.
He didn't know what he could do to make it go away.

Sephiroth would have normally pulled away at the contact to his face. He was not used to being touched unfortunately Zack was one of the few people that he grown accustomed to it from Zack, Angeal, Genesis, even Tseng to a degree. He should have pulled away and then it was suddenly too late as Zack moved and lips brushed again. It was not as intense as the first time, perhaps it was because of the heat of the moment, but it was still there and he still did not deny it. He did not pull away and the movement against his back urged the moment.

There was no excuse this time as he moved and lips pressed back against Zack's. Memories were in the forefront of his mind. Allowing Zack close in the first place even after losing Angeal and Genesis. They had even become daresay close. It had just grown with his return, had been angered by him being used by her, the fury at taking everything from him. And then finally the threat against Rufus.

Instantly Sephiroth tried to push Zack away as he sat up. No, he was his superior officer. He was heading SOLDIER now and that made Zack his direct subordinate. And Zack was hers... If he allowed this to continue it would cross a line, a line he did not want to cross. It was hard enough just being friends and knowing the inevitable, that they could very well be standing on opposite sides in this war. How hard would it be if it were more? He couldn't kill Angeal and Genesis, would he be able to kill Zack?

No, it was already too late for that. He had already threatened Rufus, he had sworn to himself that he would use the strength of SOLDIER to keep Zack safe. This had moved past friendship some time ago. The realization of that struck him as he tried to piece together the emotions he could not understand and finally he began to understand what Reno had told him. He understood how it felt all too well.

Zack felt the kiss back. He hadn't been expecting it, he had been expecting Sephiroth to deny him push him away.
If Sephiroth had just pushed him back then and there, he could have dealt to it was a momentary lapse of concentration.
But he hadn't. Now he was more than confused. This could hurt people. He could hurt Seph.
She could hurt Seph using him and this weird moment against Sephiroth. She could truly break him with this.

Zack felt Seph's attempt to push back finally and Zack let go freeing him.
He pulled his hand back and he could see it was shaking. That had been really stupid.
She was linked to him she could see what he saw and felt what he did.
He moved his hands to his head. "Sorry I wasn't thinking... I..."

His voice was lost at that moment and he dreaded what was going to happen because of this.
Zack looked to his shaking hand. The feeling of those lips against his.
He wouldn't let it happen again. He couldn't. To keep Sephiroth safe from her... from him.
"I needed to know if there was truly something there..."

'That it wasn't just me feeling this.' He added to himself in thought.

Sephiroth pulled fully away from Zack and he quickly stood. A step back was taken, the realization lingering in the forefront of his mind. He could not deny this but neither could he allow this to continue. "Did you get your answer?"

He needed to stay calm, needed to be reasonable, needed to stop this somehow.

"Zack this cannot go any further. Rufus has placed me in control of SOLDIER. I am your superior," he shook his head. He needed to clear it somehow but it was failing. Was it this new humanity that made it so difficult, or these emotions that somehow unbidden Zack had ignited. But they were not disappearing, they remained there, perhaps even more powerful than they had been.

Sephiroth turned away towards the counter and rested both hands upon the shattered Masamune. His head dropped slightly and the silver hair fell around his body and eyes shut. No, it should have been easy to stop this, to control these feelings but it was not. It just frustrated him more.

When Sephiroth asked him if he got his answer, Zack couldn't reply. He had got his answer.
But it only roused more questions. Questions he knew Sephiroth would not have.
At the words of Seph being his superior, Zack knew he shouldn't press this any further.
"Understood... sir." Zack clutched at the sheet and he let his head drop.

Nothing could come of this he knew it, it shouldn't, not while he was her new favorite.
"If it was different though... If I wasn't her chosen one..." He looked up at Sephiroth.
Seph's back turned to him leaning over his broken sword.
"I wouldn't care what you said. Superior or not. I got my answer it's there."

That would have to do for now. Seph cared for him and he cared for Seph.
But it was to go no further. That irritated him suddenly. It wasn't fair.
"If I'm ever cured... know that I won't listen to you pulling your rank bullshit on me."
Zack slipped from the bed grabbing his muscle shirt and pants.

Screw the ShinRa uniform right then. He'd wear what he wanted, when he wanted it.
This whole thing had put him in a fowl mood and he was ready to go punch Rufus in the face.
"If you have to kill me though, so be it fine at least you know how I feel..."
Zack pulled the clothes on then looked at the muscle shirt then to his chains and sighed.

"At least I know how I feel now..." Zack walked to the door opening it.
"I'm going to see Rufus I need to get these damn chains off. So I can actually wear a shirt."
Zack opened the door and looked to the WRO guard at the door and he raised a brow as the soldier spoke.
"Sorry sir you have to remain here. Rufus will see you when he's ready."

It seemed impersonal but that was the way it had to be. They had to stop this before it became any worse. His voice reached his ears but Sephiroth did not turn towards him. Just like Zack, willing to refuse his orders. If it were different it would have never come to this. He would not feel everything in him tearing at even the idea of delivering that killing blow to Zack.

Yes he knew how Zack felt, he knew his own actions, but to do this...

They would be well beyond the line of friendship, it wasn't proper to have a relationship with any subordinate, it just got in the way. But a relationship? Friendship? How far apart were they? Was he not already in too deep? Bare fingers brushed the cool metal along the sharp shard. Lightly it traced along his skin, a thin red line across the fingers. Normally it would heal almost immediately but now it waited some time before the thin line clotted and began healing. Just a human... that's all he was now. He did not even know how to live life as he was, had never had to.

If he were cured...

If he were there would be no choice in the matter. Zack would pursue and he could not kill him. It was not an option any longer. If Zack had to die it would not be by his hand. And now they were both aware of the truth. "And that is the only thing stopping you? Her? If you choose how to live based on what she may do you have already lost."

Zack was just glaring at the guard. He didn't move from his spot just blocked the exit.
"I'll call Rufus you stay here sir."
With that the door was shut in his face. Zack was forced to stay cooped up in this room.
He could of managed if he wasn't so emotionally irritated and Sephiroth wasn't being an ass.

Then he heard the statement about having already lost. The cells began to turn inside rapidly.
His fists clenched at his sides and he could feel them shaking. They wanted to hit him.
But he couldn't and his hands twitched as he stood just glaring at the door.
He had to calm them down. Before he hurt someone. Jenova he couldn't control her.

"You would know alllllllll about that wouldn't you... sir." Zack didn't even look at Sephiroth.
He just kept staring at the door like a child in time out angry at being placed in this position.
Zack blinked for a moment realizing that the cells were speaking through him. She had truly cut Sephiroth off.
To the point where he could feel the cells inside hate on Sephfor the betrayal.

Zack just dropped to the ground and he let out a breath. "Damnit sorry." He ran a hand through his hair.
"Just quit being an ass okay. I need you okay? You have been through this, just stop shutting me help and help me through this."
He sighed. "I don't want to snap out of a controlled trance and find you dead on the end of Angeal's sword."
He pushed himself up slowly. "We'll deal to us later, because when this is over there is so going to be a us you have no say."

Sephiroth lifted his head as he turned back towards Zack. He needed to help him fight her... even though he did not exactly have the best history when it came to her. He needed him? It confused him as much as anything else that was said between them. He tried to focus on what needed to be done. Before it had been so simple but with Zack on the ground looking as pitiful as he had in the lift.

A them? He would not even know how to begin. He would not understand what he was meant to do.

"Zack... if I must die it will not be at your hand."

He stood and crossed over before he knelt down before Zack. "I do not believe she can control you to that point."

Zack nodded his head slowly as he looked at Seph before him.
"I don't think I could either... but these cells of hers... they're pretty pissed at you."
He stood up and lent back against the door. "Anyways... I need to get these off."
Zack held up his chained wrists. "Because I would really like to wear a shirt before I get cold."
He looked to the door. "Knock out the guard for me would you?" He flashed Sephiroth a grin.

"If she desired to kill me she would have tried harder," Sephiroth glanced away as he stood and leaned back against the wall. "I do not believe my death is what she is after. I still remain the only success of the Jenova project and though she may have chosen you you are a surrogate son," a sigh escaped as he turned back to look at Zack. "I am sorry Zack. You have ended a casualty in this battle between her and myself but this is one feud that I cannot for any reason admit defeat."

The green eyes closed as he turned away. "I did not mean to involve you in this," his head dropped and his hair fell around him. "I have humanity after so many years, the cost for my redemption, but it cost much more than I imagined it ever would."

A slow breath escaped and the green eyes locked on Zack for a moment. "I will not knock your guard unconscious just so you can get to Rufus. Do you not think they do not doubt me enough? The last thing needed is for me to attack a guard."

Zack grinned. "Oh yeah not with your reinstatement..."
He flopped against the wall. "Guess it's a wait till Rufus gets here then."
Waiting was something Zack really wasn't good at.
No choice though, did he pass enough now to earn no cuffs?

Zack was processing the earlier words about being caught between Sephiroth and Jenova.
"Hey it's not your fault for me getting my ass infected."
Zack slid down the wall to sit on the ground. "My guard was down and I was trying to get Yuffie out of there."
He looked up at the ceiling. "I doubt she attacked me because of you. It was convenience, well that's what it felt like."

The more he thought on that moment, the more he wondered why Jenova had picked him.
"That and she probably picked up her cells and yours in me. None of that is your fault. That's Hojo's mark right there."

"I do not need to give them a reason to doubt when Rufus has just placed me in charge of SOLDIER and you could do with learning some patience," assuming it was much the same as it had always been. They were distant memories of long ago, back when Zack had just been his friend. They had had their conversation and now it could be pushed away. There were things that needed to be done without it interfering. They had agreed, nothing could happen, not yet. If Zack was cured then that would be another talk.

"If I had surrendered she likely would have had no need for all these other children. I was the only one she ever needed, and now that she has chosen to make me human she has no choice but to choose a replacement. If I had relented perhaps she would have released you."

But then it would have been over... Sephiroth shook the thought from his mind. If he had returned to her side there was a certainty that this world would end. He would not fail again.

Guest

I was sitting on the roof of the lodge when I heard the clinking of metal behind me. My grin was huge, but I didn't before moving since the footsteps where getting closer, and then he came into view, Vincent 'Back-from-the-almost-dead' Valentine. "It's nice to see you looking healthier. You're still deathly pale though." I joked, and I swore I saw the slight twitch of his lips behind that ridiculously huge collar of his. This smile was the push I needed because I had been stalling on kissing him, which I had promised to do when I next saw him. The smile convinced me that he might not freak out entirely - heck, he might even return the kiss if I was super lucky - so when he crouched down beside me, I took advantage and leaned in to kiss him. The short kiss left a tingling sensation on my lips, but when I saw the look of surprise on Vincent's face which quickly returned to stoicness as if it had never happened, the tingling sensation faded. Damn it, what had I been thinking?! He didn't like it, and didn't like me that way and I had just made things awkward between us! Vincent asked me to fill him in on everything I knew and I did, not mentioning the kiss until silence fell again. For once, it was Vince who broke the silence.

"So... What now?" He asked, and although I knew he didn't mean what happens now that we have kissed, I answered it as if he meant that anyway.

"I don't know. You go back to being a Lucrecia lover and I just go back to being... Loveless."

"Yuffie-"

I shook my head and stood up. "Forget it. Forget I said or did anything ok? Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go and... Do something." That excuse to leave was failed, but I didn't care. I climbed off of the roof and headed inside, sitting down in a corner - I think I'd call it the emo corner - in the hallway, clutching my knees to my chest and resting my head on my knees, thinking about the mess I had just made.

Vincent watched as Yuffie left and heaved a sigh. What had just happened? Why had it happened? What did he feel about the particular event? He wasn't sure, everything was so confusing right now to the point that he could feel a headache growing just behind his left temple. He pressed two fingers to it and winced slightly as it sent a shot of pain through that area of his head and then he looked out towards the surrounding trees, listening to a nearby waterfall as if it would ease the confusion, No such luck. The Galian Beast had decided to add to the confusion.

'Host, can I just say something, on behalf of my brothers and I?' The demon asked in Vincent's mind, his voice strangely hesitant. It was this hesitance which made Vincent curious enough to let the beast speak.
'
What do you want?'

'Well, Death Gigas and I actually like the little one and, if you decide to let yourself love her, we promise not to harm her. And Hellmasker says that he will 'tolerate' her.'

If he let himself love her? What was that even supposed to mean? And what would a demon know about love anyway. Vincent did not reply to The Galian Beast, he was to confused to even come up with a good answer, but he kept the demon's words in the back of his head anyway as he jumped down from the roof and took a walk down the dirt road on the cliff to try and clear his mind and get rid of the headache.

Zack heaved a sigh at those words and he looked at Seph a brow raising.
"But you didn't and she didn't. So now we're in this situation." He waved a hand about. "So forget about it okay. The main thing is..."
Zack motioned to the broken sword. "Getting your sword fixed." He rubbed behind his head.
"Not that I looked while you were out of the room or anything." Zack laughed nervously.
"Okay so I did but when I see something wrapped up like that I think instant body part mafia style. So I just HAD to look!"
He tried to shrug it off. "Morbid curiosity gets me every time."

Sephiroth gave a slight sound as he turned back towards Zack. "I am not surprised you looked, it was there for any to see."

It was almost a relief that Zack did not waste his time with condolences. It had been harsh, the idea of his sword being shattered sent pain through him. For him the blade had been a part of his soul, but he did not need nor want any pity. Not about the Masamune and not about his human condition. "We will be departing for Wutai to take care of that problem. I believe Rufus wants you to accompany Reno, Tseng, and myself for the trip."

Slowly he glanced back towards Zack. "If you object I will make it an order."

Not like it was something he had experienced for Zack to actually follow all the orders. Briefly he wondered himself why he always was around the young man and why he sought so desperately to protect him. As much as he hated to admit it Reno was right and now how they felt was out in the open for both of them. The mission was going to prove to be interesting.
